Amblyopia: Understanding the Condition and Its Impact on Vision Health
Amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” is a vision development disorder where one eye fails to achieve normal visual acuity, even with prescription glasses or contact lenses. It usually begins in childhood when the brain starts favoring one eye over the other, leading to reduced vision in the weaker eye.
If left untreated, amblyopia can cause long-term vision impairment and depth perception issues. Early detection is crucial, as the condition is most effectively treated during childhood when the visual system is still developing. Common causes include misaligned eyes (strabismus), significant differences in refractive errors between the eyes, or conditions that block clear vision such as cataracts in early life.
